How to Remove a Rear Axle Shaft ?

A rear axle shaft is found on vehicles with rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. The rear axle transfers power from the rear differential to the drive wheels. The axle uses two joints to provide flexibility in the joint. Over time, these joints eventually fail and begin to grind. The problem will present itself as a constant clicking noise while making turns. When you notice this, you'll need to know how to remove the rear axle shaft so you can replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel blocks
  • Tire wrench
  • Flat-tip screwdriver
  • Impact wrench with air compressor

Place wheel blocks in front of the front wheels and engage the parking brake.

Jack up on the rear jack point located behind the trunk.

Place jack stands under the rear pinch welds of the vehicle and lower the vehicle onto the stands.

Remove the rear wheel lug nuts with an impact wrench and pull the wheels off the rear hub assembly.

Remove the center hub nut on the wheel hub with an impact wrench.

Support the lower control arm with a floor jack while you remove the wheel hub to lower the control arm bolts with an impact wrench.

Pull the hub assembly up and pull the axle shaft out of the hub assembly.

Pry the other end of the axle shaft out of the rear differential using a flat-tip screwdriver.
