Data show that in the first half of this year, among the world's top ten battery manufacturers, the installed capacity of LG Chem, Samsung SDI, SK Innovation and AVIC Lithium has all achieved year-on-year growth, while other manufacturers have experienced varying degrees of decline.

Specifically, LG Chem's installed capacity reached 10.5 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 82.8%, which jumped from the fourth place in the same period last year to the first place. CATL ranks second with 10 GWh installed capacity, with a market share of 23.5%. It was followed by Panasonic's 8.7 GWh with a market share of 20.4%. From the perspective of installed capacity, the above three manufacturers leave other companies far behind.

Of course, in addition to LG Chem, the other two of the three major battery manufacturers in South Korea-Samsung SDI and SK Innovation also performed well. Among them, the installed capacity of Samsung SDI was 2.6 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 34.9%, and its market share was 6%. It jumped from the fifth place in the same period last year to the fourth place in the ranking. As for SK Innovation, it also moved from 9th to 6th with a market share of 3.9%, with installed capacity of 1.7 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 66%.

SNE Research pointed out that the reason why LG Chem has achieved rapid growth is that its supporting Tesla Model 3 (made in China), Audi e-tron (95 kWh), Renault Zoe and other models have been selling well recently. Samsung SDI supplies electric vehicles such as Audi e-tron (71 kWh), BMW 330e, and Volkswagen e-Golf, while SK Innovation benefits from its orders with Hyundai and Kia.

In particular, the E-GMP electric modular platform specially created by Hyundai Motor Group selected SK Innovation as the first battery supplier and LG Chem as the second battery supplier. Hyundai's prototype vehicle built on the E-GMP platform is expected to be put into production in the first quarter of 2021. It is foreseeable that it will bring a large number of orders for SK Innovation and LG Chem.
