How to Change the Oil in a Challenger SRT
The SRT is the top-of-the-line Dodge Challenger. The rules for changing the oil are the same as they are for every vehicle. You should change the oil in your Challenger every 3,000 miles to keep it from breaking down and causing the engine to run without lubrication. It's also important to change the oil filter, as the old filter is contaminated and needs to be removed so it does not contaminate the new oil.
Step 1
Park the Challenger on a level surface. Lift the hood and prop it open.
Step 2
Unscrew the oil cap on the top of the engine and place it to the side. This will help the oil flow when the drain plug is removed.
Step 3
Detach the four bolts securing the splash guard under the car, using a socket wrench.
Step 4
Slide a drain pan under the engine. Unscrew the drain plug and allow the oil to flow into the pan. Reinsert the drain plug when the oil has finished draining.
Step 5
Unscrew the oil filter at the front of the engine with an oil filter wrench. Place it in the drain pan with the waste oil. Spread a small amount of clean oil around the gasket on the top of the new filter. Screw the filter onto the oil filter housing by hand. Never tighten an oil filter with a wrench, as this could strip the threads of the filter or the filter assembly.
Step 6
Bolt the splash guard back on the car with a socket wrench.
Step 7
Pour five quarts of motor oil into the oil fill hole. Pull the dipstick out of its tube. Wipe it clean with a rag and reinsert it. Pull the dipstick back out and check the oil level. If it registers less than full, add oil in half-quart increments until the dipstick reaches the full mark.
Step 8
Start the engine and allow it to idle for five minutes. Turn the engine off and allow it to sit for five minutes. Check the oil level and fill if necessary.
Reattach the oil filler cap securely. Reinsert the dipstick in the tube. Close the hood.
