Huawei issued a statement on May 24 to reiterate that it will not build cars, saying “this long-term strategy has been clear in 2018, and nothing has changed.”
The company considers that the auto industry would love to see that Huawei helps automakers build future-oriented cars using its ICT (information and communications technology) capabilities, namely supplying carmakers with ICV (intelligent-connected vehicle)-related components, instead of making Huawei-branded cars.
Huawei said it has not invested in any carmakers yet, and will not make such investment, let alone controlling or participating in shares. In the future, any discussions about Huawei's car-building plan or equity participation in the auto manufacturing industry are all rumors and should not be trusted.
According to the statement, Huawei has chosen BAIC BJEV, Changan Auto, and GAC Group as its strategic partners, supporting them in developing their own sub-brands. The vehicles armed with Huawei's autonomous driving solution are allowed to bear the “HI” logo (standing for “Huawei Inside”) after being authorized by Huawei.
Speaking of the cooperation with SERES, an EV manufacturer of Chongqing Sokon Industry Group, Huawei said it is the supplier of the SERES SF5's electrified parts and Hisar cockpit components. Meanwhile, to help Huawei's authorized mobile phone retail stores survive the sales plunge of smart phones, the company is supporting some of them in selling this vehicle model, so as to gain revenue correspondingly.
A local media channel reported last week that Huawei is cementing the cooperation with Changan Auto, attempting to co-design and develop automotive semiconductors.
After being reached for comment, the Chongqing-based automaker said the collaboration with Huawei mainly focuses on the development of an all-new platform and branding.
